They are black, and they have to watch their step. They have ecstatic sex with questionable women and decent sex with decent women. Characters eat in diners, run through alleys and get beaten insensate by steel-fisted thugs. The setting is once again Los Angeles, the morality once again ambiguous. ![]() Walter Mosley’s “Fearless Jones” feels familiar, like a sleeveless white cotton T-shirt you wear when you’re solving a mystery you didn’t want any part of in the first place. ![]() ![]() Today, door-knocking is viewed with suspicion, and tragically, occasionally met with violence. Now, I treasure the openness, curiosity, and sincerity of both those visitors and my dad. The visit lasted close to an hour, and soon became a regular occurrence anytime Jehovah’s Witnesses knocked. As a child, I would roll my eyes at the intrusions. ![]() They shared their faith then my dad shared his, Islam. My dad opened the door wide, smiled, and welcomed them into the living room, offering them cups of tea. I peeked out the window to find a pair of suit-clad Jehovah’s Witnesses, and promptly retreated – from what I’d heard, most people avoided them. Ding-dong! It was the mid-’90s, in my childhood home in rural central New York, where we didn’t frequently get visitors. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Stars of diamond - atoms as massive as stars." An allusion to some ofthe exotic forms of matter found in stars. The other aspect of Sagan that comes across clearly is that he was not afraid to stepon toes, an attribute that often earned him the label "arrogant." Sagan personally was a thoroughgoing materialist, but in his writings he displayed adeeper respect for religion than most people give him credit for. ![]() The statement is a tautology: "everything there is is everythingthere is." Sagan probably means "the material universe is all that ever was, is,or will be", a statement that many people, of course, reject. That is, it's true, but so what? We don't learn anything wedidn't already know. Throughout the book, Wendy is more concerned with being reunited with her parents than winning King Coins. She isn't nearly as competitive as her brother. Wendy is the twelve-year-old protagonist and narrator of the book. At Camp Jellyjam, he has a great time playing sports against other kids.
